In today’s ever changing economic climate saving money has become the number one motivator for most families. While some families tend to save money by shopping less or eating out others look to save money by cutting back on cable TV, Internet, phone or satellite subscriptions. Often times what happens is the home owner doesn’t realize that in a rush to save money they also see a huge drop in their entertainment value.
Basic TV Channels vs. Basic Cable
What a lot people don’t realize is that basic TV channels now have a lot to offer in terms of programming. In fact, people can get access to public broadcasting stations, some government channels, local news and even some local or regional sports networks.
With new regulations from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) some cable companies have been able to scramble many local channels. If you want those channels all the subscriber in your area has to do is unscramble the signals.
With a basic cable package you will get access to basic cable TV channels as well as additional cable channels.
How To Find Free Basic TV options
Another cool option to having TV is to buy an antenna to capture a signal from the above mentioned local channels. However, this option is hit or miss and could be unreliable at times. If you have access to Internet you can simply buy a streaming device and watch TV for free through one of its supported apps or you could purchase a monthly subscription to Hulu or NetFlix. Both of these streaming options offer access to current and past TV shows.
If you would like to obtain basic cable then packages start as low as $15 per month in some areas. While there are many companies to choose from, some of the most popular are Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter and Bright House Networks.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent letters to Time Warner Cable, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision Systems Corp on October 23,2015. The letter was addressing an investigation into whether or not these telecommunication companies were giving customers the Internet speed they were promised. Mr. Schneiderman requested samples from each Internet Service Provider (ISP) to prove the Internet speed was what the companies advertised. The attorney general’s office stated that they had received complaint letters from customers to investigate the companies.
Around 2014, the Federal Communications Commission released a document entitled “Measuring Broadband America – 2014.” The document highlighted multiple findings that stated 80 percent of Verizon’s DSL and Cablevision subscribers receive more speed than advertised at the time of their contract agreement. In fact, Verizon’s DSL performed at an average of 83 percent of the advertised speed which was slightly below the industry average of 91 percent. Time Warner Cable actually did well by performing at 91 percent of what their advertised speed stated.
The data compiled was not only from New York but the nation as a whole, however, when a state-by-state test is performed New York ranks 4th in the United States for receiving actually Internet speed that was advertised. In fact, New York’s top ISP’s are Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS.
Without us knowing the full details of Schneiderman’s complaints it seems that New York ISPs are providing great service to its subscribers on a consistent basis.
The superstar actor and comedian Will Ferrell once released a tweet on Twitter, “Before you marry a person you should first make them use a computer with slow Internet to see who they really are.”
A slow Internet connection is no laughing matter when you want to get work done, watch streaming content or just surf the web. If you have been having connection or speed issues with XFINITY® there are several reasons why.
Below you will find seven top reasons why your XFINITY® connection is slow.
1. Are You Getting What You Pay For?
Often times your Internet may be slow because you are on a lower tier plan. To find out what type of service you have simply log in to your XFINITY account and look at what speed your are paying for. If it’s not the speed you need then call a customer service representative to discuss upgrading your account.

The performance of your Internet is often times based on two factors: bandwidth and latency. Latency is simply the amount of time it takes for your computer device to connect to the Web address’s server. An easy way to measure the latency of your connection is conduct a simple ping command from your command prompt.
3. Your Wi-Fi Signal Is Bad
In some cases your Internet may be in good condition but your Wi-Fi signal is either weak or not working at all. Wi-Fi is similar to a cell phone’s reception in the sense that it can be spotty at times. To find out whether or not it’s your Wi-Fi signal find out if other people are using your Wi-Fi connection to surf the Web.
4. Your Hardware Could Be Bad And May Need Replacing
Most of the time people have issues with their Internet connection because the hardware like the modem has gone bad. May people don’t realize it but modems fail pretty regularly. Modems made in the early 2000s are not going to be able to handle the bandwidth or network upgrades that Internet Service Providers offer their customers. You can restart you modem to see if it clears up any connection issues. If that doesn’t work then contact your ISP to request a new one
5. You Could Have A Virus Draining Your Resources
One of the major causes of your Internet slow down may be attributed to malware and virus which are living on your computer and forcing your Internet speeds to slow down. Lifehacker’s Whitson Gordon suggests that, instead of loading up on antivirus software (which can also slow your computer), you should practice safe browsing. Take care to avoid unsafe files, Internet pop-ups, or unknown links, and you’ll likely see a marked improvement.
6. You Are Running Software That Requires Bandwidth
Most people don’t realize that software running in the background of you computer can create increase bandwidth usage. Watching videos, listening to music, downloading files with heavy animation can cause your Internet connection to slow down.
7. You Computer Is Old And Slow
After running connection tests and finding that your Internet speed is fine, you may want to consider purchasing a new computer. Using a computer from the late 90s or early 2000s often cannot handle the load of looking at videos, streaming music and downloading files. You may want to consider freeing up some hard drive space. If that doesn’t work you may want to purchase a new computer.

Comcast High Speed Internet – While Comcast’s cable services have been very successful and popular in many markets, the company has received a great deal of negative press regarding their bandwidth caps.
Customer Service and Support – It has been noted that customers particularly complain about bad experiences with the call centers. Comcast also has below average ratings in customer service, reliability and support. Another complaint was that customers were not allowed to sign up in person at their many service centers. Over the past decade, subscribers have highlighted the possibility that their Internet Service Providers (ISPs) of lowering or capping downstream and upstream speeds at numbers lower than what was originally advertised either on TV or their website. This method is commonly known as throttling. In recent days, claims have been brought to light with federal investigations disclosing that Internet companies intentionally slowed their customers service for heavy users, thus reducing bandwidth usage during heavier hours of the day. By doing this, the overall Internet performance was degraded especially when listening to music or streaming video or movies.
The president of the United States of America, Barack Obama has publicly endorsed net neutrality say their shouldn’t be any gate keepers for online services. In recent months, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved tighter net neutrality regulations, which aim to protect the openness of the Internet.
Even though steps have been taken on the federal level it still doesn’t keep Internet companies from throttling. They can slow down major content networks but they can slow down overall network traffic. Even though the FCC has stepped in with regulations, Internet throttling is still a common complaint against many cable ISPs.
How Can I Find Out If My Internet Is Being Throttled?
It is very easy to find out if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is throttling your connection. You can run what’s known as an Internet speed test. This test will tell you the health of your Internet connection. Once the test has started, it will tell you overall time it takes for your ISP to reply to your request either upstream or downstream. If you really what to catch your ISP red handed then you want to perform a series of speed tests numerous time throughout the month. Let’s say you are watch a movie online and the images seem a little unclear then what you want to do is perform a quick test. You can also perform a test during peak hours during the morning and evening time. If you run regular tests you will get better data to use against lowering your monthly Internet bill. SpeedTest programs and websites are out there to help you. Do All Cable Companies Throttle?
If you look in your Internet Service Provider (ISP) contract you will not find anything pertaining to Internet throttling. You have to look under the section that says “performance agreement” and compare that with your Internet speed test data.
History: In 2015, CEO Brian Roberts stated the company will invest millions of dollars for infrastructure improvements and also hiring 5,500 call center representative who will be trained to assist customers. Recent speed test completed by the FCC show that XFINITY is one of the most reliable ISPs available to the public.
Time Warner Cable
History: Time Warner Cable has been a household name in the Internet Service Provider space for decades but they have also had their share of issues. They recently came under fire for throttling Youtube Videos or commonly known as buffering. Time Warner Cable or “TWC” was recently accused of violating the FCC net neutrality rules, and a new complaint filed against Time Warner Cable by a webcam operator alleges that the company was charging fees for better Internet traffic.
To address these allegations TWC has releases several press releases on their corporate blog.
History: Cox Communications is one of the most popular Internet Service Providers throughout various states in the south. The company has had a history of throttling its customers during peak hours. In the past they have even gone as far as setting limits on various broadband Internet accounts, thus pushing some users into an upgrade.
Recently, Cox Communications has started to clean its act by offering gigabit residential services to a select portion of its United States locations. This new service will give ISP users a faster connection by 100 times.
Recently, though, Cox has started offering residential gigabit services to select U.S. locations. This service is 100 times faster than the average U.S. Internet speeds, meaning subscribed customers will have fewer speed issues overall. Overall no Internet Service Provider is going to admit to throttling its customers, however, there are several things you can do to check the speed of your Internet and see if you are actually getting what you pay for.
